Joseph Mawson Obituary

JOSEPH C. MAWSON

AMHERST, MA — Joseph (Joe) C. Mawson, 89, passed away peacefully at home, Wednesday, May 25, 2022. He was born in Springfield on March 5, 1933, to the late Joseph R and Gladys Mawson. He graduated from Classical High School and received a B.S. of Forestry from Univ. of Maine in 1956. He earned an M.F. in Forest Management from Duke Univ. in 1958 and an M.A. in Statistics from Univ. of California, Berkeley in 1966.

He was in the Army ROTC program and entered the Army Reserves from 1956-1964. He attained the rank of Captain.

He was employed by the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management from 1958 till retirement in 1996. His area of expertise was Forest statistics, inventory, management, computer application and growth analysis. He consulted with MA Dept. of Conservation and Recreation on the management and growth analysis of MA forests and the USDA Forest Service.

Joe was a member of the Society of American Foresters and active in the local chapter for 50+ years. He was a founding member of the Massachusetts Association of Professional Foresters in 1977 and served in numerous officer positions. He was an active member of the Valley Light Opera from 1974 till 1999. His favorite was Dick Dead Eye who he was in the 1993 production of HMS Pinafore. He was active as a Boy Scout Leader with his oldest son's troop. He enjoyed designing and building many useful household items from wood. We have enough book cases to setup a library. In later years, he turned to writing poetry and brief stories of his past or as he called them "Musing of an Old Man." He became an overzealous soccer fan, cheering on his younger sons during their long careers as players. But his greatest joy was spending time with his ever-growing family.

Joe is survived by his wife of 36 years, Julia S. Mawson of Amherst. He will be greatly missed by his children: Joseph L Mawson and his wife Becky of Sunderland; Christopher Mawson and his wife, Kristin of Coeur D'Alene, Idaho; Arlanne Glasel of Fort Lauderdale, FL; Sarah Mawson, Belchertown; Kathleen Mawson, Amherst; John Mawson and his wife, Catia of Attleboro, and James Mawson and his wife, Jalysa of Belchertown. He doted on his many grandchildren: Jeryn Mawson, Holyoke; Junior and Eva Ramsey, Amherst; Rose and Xion Maddrey, Amherst; Piper, Wyatt, and Kianna Ripley of Belchertown; Shaniya, Jahrais, Zaiden, and Zariana Mawson of Belchertown, and Royal Mawson of Attleboro.

I was a student of Joes. Joe was always available for me and a steady influence on my committee for my Masters. I will always remember the smoke filled meetings in his office with Bill Rivers and others. During Covid I ran into Joe at the grocery store and Joe still had a hearty laugh and a smile. I will always remember how folks like Joe and Bill Mac, and Don Mader held me so I could would succeed. Rest in peace all of you fine folks.
