Overview: Sustainable Food Center (SFC) cultivates a healthy community by strengthening the local food system and improving access to nutritious, affordable food. SFC’s Grow Local program offers the resources and education to enable children and adults in Central Texas to develop skills in organic food production, as well as an understanding of the importance of local food production for the health and well-being of themselves, their families and community, and the environment. We are looking for a summer intern to assist with regular work in the Grow Local department, especially with the Spread the Harvest Program, a resource give-away program of Grow Local that offers gardeners in the Austin area free seeds, transplants, compost, and gardening educational opportunities. This volunteer should be able to speak Spanish, be comfortable speaking on the phone, and have Microsoft Office experience (especially Excel). This position would be for 10-20 hours per week, or more depending on the applicants’ interest. The length of the volunteer position would be for the summer term, start and end dates being flexible. Position Description: Grow Local is looking for an individual passionate about achieving social equality in a local and sustainable food system. The Spread the Harvest Bilingual Outreach Intern will reach out to Latino/a participants to enhance their engagement with the Spread the Harvest program, and connect them with the necessary tools to grow their own food. The intern will cultivate personal relationships with participants via phone calls and in-person meetings for initial orientations and quarterly surveys. The intern will also assist GL staff in developing an evaluation system to gauge the effectiveness of the Spread the Harvest program in the broader Austin community. Key Responsibilities: • Call and meet with Spanish-speaking and phone-only participants with orientation information or to perform quarterly surveys • Assist Grow Local Teaching Garden Coordinator with other duties related to Spread the Harvest, such as preparing for biannual Resource Give-Away Days • Design and initiate pilot garden club project to bring home gardeners together based on geography and/or language. • Participate in periodic check-in meetings with SFC Grow Local Teaching Garden Coordinator • Assist other Grow Local staff with planning and preparation for other programs associated with Spread the Harvest
