Volunteer Coordinator--part-time Overview Grow Food Northampton, owner and manager of Massachusetts’ largest community farm, seeks a part-time Volunteer Coordinator to begin immediately. A brand new staff position for the organization, the Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for creating and maintaining systems to optimize Grow Food Northampton’s large corps of volunteers, as well as our interns and work-study students. Additionally, the Volunteer Coordinator will oversee volunteer-related activities and complete administrative and programmatic tasks that intersect with volunteer coordination. This position is both hands-on at the Florence Organic Community Garden and administrative at Grow Food Northampton’s office in downtown Northampton. Grow Food Northampton seeks a self-starting individual who possesses excellent organizational skills, experience & tools; strong interpersonal skills; and a passion for sustainable community agriculture. Description of Need Grow Food Northampton (GFN) manages the Northampton Community Farm, consisting of the Florence Organic Community Garden (FOG), and four independent farm businesses. Additionally, we currently organize youth farm education programs, gardener education, and food/land access programs for low-income households. FOG gardeners (approximately 250 registered gardeners expected in 2014) are required to complete three hours of volunteer work at the Garden each growing season. Volunteers also populate GFN’s working committees (FOG steering committee, fundraising committee, and farm development committee), tend our Hunger Relief garden plots, support our educational programs, transport donated food to/from hunger relief agencies, and staff GFN’s community and fundraising events. In total, Grow Food Northampton relies on nearly 300 volunteers every year to forward our goals. To reach a higher level of effectiveness, Grow Food Northampton requires a dedicated coordinator of volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator will work closely with the Executive Director and the Administrative/Program Coordinator, as well as volunteers who currently assist in specific areas of volunteer coordination. Duties and Responsibilities Create, manage, evaluate and update efficient systems of volunteer coordination including: Outreach and screening Training Management (scheduling and oversight) Soliciting feedback Appreciation Create and manage volunteer events (eg volunteer workdays, volunteer appreciation event, etc) Manage the completion of required FOG volunteers hours (maintain lists of tasks, record hours, notifying gardeners of hours still needed for requirement, etc) In collaboration with other staff, train and manage work-study students and interns Outside of the growing season, assume other GFN duties as time permits such as organizing and assisting with administrative, fundraising, education, and outreach activities Qualifications Passion for sustainable community agriculture Experience in volunteer coordination Detail-oriented, with excellent organizational, record keeping, and computer skills Experience and comfort interacting with individuals from diverse cultural, income and ethnic backgrounds Ability to work independently or in a group Demonstrated leadership and strong interpersonal skills Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and lift up to 30 pounds Excellent oral and written communication skills Willingness to learn new things and problem-solve creatively Flexibility in assuming varied tasks Possession of laptop for administrative work Access to efficient and reliable transportation to work sites Preferred Qualifications Flexible schedule Fluency in Spanish Proficiency in office productivity software and website maintenance tools Experience with database entry and management Compensation $17.51/hour at 15 hours per week (year-round) How to Apply Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and it is our intent to fill the position as soon as possible.
