Turf & Fields Manager - Recreation Supervisor

Job Summary The Fields Manager performs a full range of complex turf management duties to enable the effective and efficient administration of girls’ softball, adult softball and summer sports programs. Responsible for turf management and maintenance operation of 8 softball fields, 2 baseball fields and various multi-use fields. Supervision Received Works under the general supervision of the LSSE Sports and Recreation Director who provides direction and guidance, outlines departmental policies and procedures, and evaluates employee performance. Performs regular day to day duties independently and is given considerable discretion in exercising judgment, making decisions, and determining appropriate course of action. Fields Manager is expected to alert the LSSE Sports and Recreation Director of serious program problems and policy issues. Work is reviewed through regular meetings, reports, public feedback, and the LSSE Sports and Recreation Director's observations. Supervision Exercised The Fields Manager is responsible for his/her own work and supervision of lower level part-time maintenance personnel. Major Duties 1. Coordinate, with other departments (school and town), directors and entities, the fields and facilities for successful program implementation and effective maintenance procedures. 2. Pursuant to adopted policies and procedures, coordinates the activities and maintenance of the field management program. Maintains all records of maintenance action and timelines for performing the various operations on the fields. 3. Aids in the maintenance of town athletics fields including layout, grooming, trimming, painting, repairing, moving bleachers and goals, and other general turf maintenance tasks. 4. Operates, maintains and performs minor repairs on tools and equipment. Requisitions supplies and materials. 5. Oversees the safety of employees ensuring that safety precautions and rules are adhered to at all times including but not limited to ensuring proper clothing, footwear, and other safety equipment is worn at all times. 6. Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities The effective execution of the duties of this position requires a thorough understanding of the turf operation of various softball, baseball and playing fields. Knowledge of common turf management tools and equipment is highly sought after. An understanding of the game of softball and baseball and the needs of the local players are beneficial. The position requires an ability to effectively deal with a wide variety of people. Tools and Equipment Used Knowledge of operation and use of motorized vehicles and equipment, including pickup truck, utility truck, trailer, mower, edger, trimmer and other common turf management tools, common hand and power tools, shovels, rakes and wrenches. Work Environment The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee routinely works in outside weather conditions. The employee works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud in field settings. Majoring in turf management, sport management, recreation, or leisure studies or any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform the duties listed above. Background in interscholastic or youth sports is preferred but not required. Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and strong ability to work individually. Knowledge of turf management and planning and administration are essential. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders and the general public. Ability to communicate effectively orally; ability to plan and supervise work of staff and volunteers. Special Requirements Valid Driver's License
Wage, Salary & Benefits Description:
Seasonal Position: Starts ASAP (Spring) - Late Summer/Early Fall (Somewhat Flexible) Salary: $9.68-$12.97/hr Benefits: None. Temporary part-time position Hours: Flexible on starting and ending hours. Once May starts, 30-40hrs per week with the possibility of more or less on certain weeks.
