Job Title:
AmeriCorps VISTAs in Sustainable Ag on Kaua`i, Hawai`i
Job Type:
Full-time, 12 months
Job Description:
Hawai`i is the most isolated population center on the earth, and Kaua`i is the most remote of all the islands. Known as "The Garden Isle" due to its lush tropical environment and year-round sunshine, Kaua`i was known in ancient Hawaiian times as an agriculturally productive breadbasket for the island chain's food supply. Now past its recent post-colonized history of plantation-style pineapple and sugar agriculture, the island is gaining momentum in returning to its roots of providing plentiful, healthy food for its community and creating a bright, self-reliant food security future. Will you answer the call to help? We have several AmeriCorps VISTA opportunities on the remote tropical island of Kaua`i, Hawai`i in the areas of Fundraising & Development, Youth & Food Programs, Volunteer Coordination, & Farm-to-School Programs. Visit us at http://www.malamakauai.org/mk/about-mk-2/jobs-volunteer/ to learn more about start dates, duties, qualifications, & more. WHY KAUA`I? - This remote island is at the end of a 45-day fuel supply chain, imports upwards of 85% of its food, and only has a 7-day supply of food on island at any given time - 36% of Kaua`i's population is considered "economically needy", with drastically growing income inequality and gentrification greatly contributing to displacement of local and native families - An emerging cultural revolution of native Hawaiians, or Kanaka Maoli, is bringing traditional land management practices back to the forefront in an agricultural renaissance of malama `aina (caring for the land which feeds us) - Kaua`i is a highly unique environment as Hawai`i's most ancient island, home to the wettest spot on earth and many endemic plant and animal species found nowhere else in the world
