Tree Trimmer and Climber - Public Works
Nature of Work in this Class Skilled operation of specialized power tools and equipment in the trimming and removal of trees requiring considerable manipulative skill. Work is performed under general supervision in accordance with applicable Massachusetts and Department of Transportation rules and regulations. Duties can include routine manual laboring tasks requiring considerable strength and endurance. Work will generally be done during normal business hours; however, it will also include responding to afterhours emergencies. Illustrative Examples of Work Operates all power tools and motorized equipment used in tree trimming, repair and removal; performs related tasks in repair, maintenance and removal of trees and shrubs. Ability to work in small areas at significant height, often during adverse conditions. In addition to the above, at the discretion of the Director or his designee, must be able to operate the following: dump trucks, stump grinders, chippers, snow plow and material spreading equipment. Must load and unload assigned vehicle, operate chain saws, trim brush and may perform any task charged to the Department in its daily activity. Services equipment with fuel, oil or coolants, makes minor adjustments and repairs; maintains power tools. Performs related work as required. Desirable Knowledge, Abilities and Skills No less than one year prior experience in tree trimming and removal work. Ability to operate all power tools associated with this operation. Knowledge of ropes and signaling techniques involved in belaying and lowering wood/limbs during tree pruning and removal process. Knowledge of various tree species and assessment techniques used in rating tree health, as well as identification of invasive plants and insects of concern. Considerable knowledge of hazards and safety precautions in operating tools and equipment in this class. Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to tools and equipment operated. Working knowledge of the geography of the city. Ability to follow oral and written instructions frequently of a technical nature. Exertional Requirements Physical Activity and Strength Requirements Standing and Bending A significant portion of the day is spent standing and bending by the worker. Most of these are regular completion of their tasks as described earlier. Typically the standing and bending are usually either a low weight or no weight type of resistance; however, it tends to be a repetitive type of motion. It is most commonly seen in feeding small limbs into chipper and in the manipulation of tools such as shovels, rakes, hoes, etc. Lifting The frequent lifting of tools such as shovels, rakes, hoes etc. that usually weigh 5-15 lbs. are common. There is an occasion in which the employee is required to lift a heavier type of material or object. This object may weight approximately 40-50 lbs. and is typically performed from the floor to waist height. These objects can be bulky in nature and sometimes have to be coordinated with a co-worker. Sometimes trash or bags of items must be handled by the worker. Carrying The employee typically has to carry from one area of the work site to the other various tools. These tools would most likely be of the type described earlier shovels, rakes, and are usually bunched in groups of three or four. There are occasions where the worker does have to carry an object such as a bag with a co-worker. The weight again would probably extend between 30-50 lbs. Pushing The worker is required to push power equipment carts or different rakes, floats in the repair of sidewalks and roadways. Sometimes it requires the worker to reach far out while handling this tool which requires increased exertion by the employee as the further extended the tool becomes. Manipulating wheelbarrows full and empty also required. Pulling There are occasions where a worker must pull an item as part of their task (i.e. lawnmower, compactor) Climbing Work requires ability to climb but mostly to load and unload a vehicle and to access bucket and controls on specialized motor equipment. Stooping There is a frequent degree of stooping especially in the area of sidewalk and road repair. Workers must maintain a static stooped position while trying to spread and pack down different areas under repair. Kneeling Kneeling may be performed in lawn and landscaping construction. Crouching See above. Weather 95% of work performed is outside in varying degrees of temperature.
