Job Description:
Bring your gardening skills up a notch or learn for the first time the art and science of ornamental gardening. An employee of Castle Landscape and Garden helps plant and maintain English style perennial and container gardens on high-end seaside grounds, or in-town properties of our long-time clients. We have been in business as gardeners/plantscapers for over 30 years and our success is due to providing highly expert and creative horticultural services in a most efficient manner. We use sustainable and environmentally sensitive practices particular to our unique island and our town's by-laws. Training starts with owners Mark and Mary Ellen cleaning out the beds, forking soil, pruning shrubs. As spring arrives we tend the perennials and shrubs and start new plantings. In May we plant window boxes and flower pots. As plants start growing, and reaching their full blooming glory, we are stepping into full flower beds, moving carefully around to fork, deadhead, stake, and spray. We work in standing, bending, reaching, and kneeling positions. We tend the pots and boxes throughout the season, and work on challenges unique to Nantucket such as sandy soil, wind, deer and rabbits. Once trained, employees drive a company truck with a co-worker and perform the weekly garden maintenance visits independently. Employees working through the fall discover that the island's beautiful September and October weather allows a succesion of perennials to bloom, as well as the container annuals to continue to thrive. November brings tasks of cutting spent perennials to the soil, dividing and transplanting and planning improvements to the show for next year. We enjoy discussions on gardening and the profession and business of it. We welcome hearing of employees' interests and experiences and value your problem solving, ideas, and input.
