Equine Management

The Equine Management major at the Stockbridge School is grounded in equine business concepts and hands-on stable management experience. Students learn the scientific concepts and practical application of the management, care, and breeding of horses through comprehensive coursework and technical training at the Hadley Farm Equine Center. The program focuses on the essentials of managing a successful horse business based on knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of the equine industry as well as an understanding of efficient business practices. Second-year seniors cooperatively manage the Stockbridge Stables, a student-run boarding business at the Hadley Farm. Students also take courses in equitation, instructor certification, and training of young horses. The Stockbridge School’s program carries on a proud tradition by offering a two-year associate of science degree, preparing students to enter the equine industry in a variety of careers. After completing the Equine Management major at Stockbridge School, some students choose to continue their education through the BDIC program at UMass and obtain their bachelor’s degree.

The horse industry is a highly diverse industry that supports a wide range of activities in all regions of the country, providing a variety of career opportunities for you after graduating from the Equine Management program. In this field, with its tradition of equal opportunity for both men and women, you can find employment as a breeder, stable manager, riding instructor, professional groom, or horse trainer. Related opportunities exist in areas such as tack and equipment sales, horse feed and supplement consulting, alternative medicine, equine journalism and photography, and equine-assisted therapies. Our internship program and career seminars will help you network with major players in the equine industry and explore a variety of career pathways.
 
Opportunities in the Equine Management are Growing

Horses require skillful management, knowledgeable trainers, technical services, specialized facilities, and appropriate nutritional programs. The American Horse Council estimates that the equine industry directly contributes $39 billion annually to the nation’s economy by providing services and products to owners, riders, and horses. Over four and a half million Americans are involved in some aspect of the industry. Those who enjoy horses can establish a satisfying career in this diverse and poplar industry that involves agriculture, business, and recreation. HADLEY FARM – A 133 acre farm adjacent to the campus provides one of the finest collegiate horse facilities in the country: two spacious horse barns with over 75 box stalls, reproductive lab and breeding areas, 100’ by 200’ indoor riding arena with state of the art footing and heated classroom, full-size dressage arena, and 5/8 mile training track. The Equine Reproduction Services facility, housed at the Hadley Farm, offers advanced assisted reproductive techniques to horse breeders throughout New England and offers students top-quality learning opportunities. Students can also be involved in clinics and shows that are routinely held at the farm.

 

BAY STATE MORGANS & HANOVERIANS UM – The Hadley Farm specializes in the breeding and training of Morgan horses, a breed that originated here in Massachusetts. The breeding program began in the 1950s, with the dispersal of the U.S. Calvary horses, and proudly continues those government lines today. In addition, the farm has two elite Hanoverian broodmares which produce top quality foals for the program. 

 

OPPORTUNITIES FOR RIDING – Hunter Seat Equitation lessons emphasize a balanced seat and communication with the horse on the flat and over fences. Riding lessons in other seats are available by arrangement. If enrolled in lessons, students may also try out for one of our many teams at Hadley Farm including IHSA Equestrian Team (hunter seat), IHSA Western Team, IDA Dressage Team, Drill Team, and Morgan Show Team. The women’s Polo Team rides at Stone Pony Farm in nearby Leverett, MA.

 
New England Regional Student Program (NERSP)
