The Horse Specialist, under the direction of the Facility Director implements the apprenticeship program including scheduling training, day to day activities as well as provide feedback on student learning. Horticulture Internship - Western Region Date Posted: 3/5/2012 Location: Position Description The Trustees of Reservations is seeking applicants to participate in the 12-week Internship Program. The goal of this program is to provide students of the botanical and horticultural sciences with practical training and experience during the summer months, and to support the stewardship goals of the Stockbridge Management Unit of The Trustees of Reservations. Two candidates will be chosen to work alongside members of the Stockbridge Management Unit, and will gain practical experience with: • maintaining ornamental and natural landscapes • gaining a deeper understanding of the issues involved in preserving conserved lands • working to preserve cultural resources • dealing with the issues involved in public horticulture The term of the internship is ten to twelve weeks and will involve work on Trustees properties throughout the Western Region, although the focus of the stewardship component of the internship will be at Naumkeag, a Trustees property in Stockbridge, MA. Designated as a National Historic Landmark in 2007, the gardens at Naumkeag were designed by Fletcher Steele and the landscape is considered one of his best private works. As part of the regular work week, the internship program will include an informal series of instruction which will include lectures, demonstrations and work involving Trustees experts, as well as tours of other public gardens and Trustees properties. Interns will be expected to work and/or attend programs 40 hours each week, and will be required to work outdoors and in all weather conditions.
