History
The Stockbridge School at the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus offers an associate of science degree to highly motivated individuals. It is unique in that all Stockbridge students have all the advantages of being members of the larger UMass community while keeping the close student-faculty relationships. Students can be involved in a broad range of activities, including clubs, intramural sports, residential activities, community service activities, national competition teams and faculty research projects. Stockbridge is the small school with big opportunities. The faculty teach at the undergraduate and graduate level, participate in research, public service and are highly trained professionals.
The foundation of the Stockbridge School was laid in 1870; in 1893 a two year course was organized at Massachusetts Agriculture College (MAC); however, it was not until 1918 when the Massachusetts Legislature resolved to officially establish the two-year course in practical agriculture. On May 5th, 1928, during a special meeting, the college trustees voted to change the name to the Stockbridge School of Agriculture in honor of Levi Stockbridge the college’s first professor of agriculture and its fifth president.
Today, Stockbridge students receive an associated of science degree. Prior to 1961, graduates received certificates for completion of the two-year program. On June 10th, 2006, a major event took place at the Mullins Center on campus. Approximately 300 Stockbridge alums from the Classes of 1920 to 1960 gathered for a special commencement ceremony, during which they were awarded associate of science degrees. Accompanied by families and friends, the alums had many stories to tell—humorous, poignant, and still vivid decades later—about their campus experiences… and the value of their Stockbridge education.
Today the Stockbridge alumni are 9095 strong.
